We supplied and installed five ICS 5000 Ø350 system chimneys to serve the backup generator sets at the Research Centre. A key challenge was to minimize their visual impact on the building's aesthetics. To achieve this, the framework and outer casing of the chimneys were soda blasted, a process that allowed them to blend seamlessly with the surrounding structure, ensuring both functionality and visual harmony with the existing architecture.

Challenge

We supplied and installed five ICS5000 twin-wall flues for the building's diesel generators. The flues were routed horizontally from two plant rooms on opposite sides of the building before connecting to vertical risers. The project required careful routing through both the exterior wall and a bull-nosed overhang. To minimize the visual impact of the flues, we applied a soda blasting treatment to help them blend seamlessly with the building's architecture.

Solution

We selected the ICS5000 System Chimney for this project due to its engineered precision joints and proven track record. This solution, with a designation of T600 H1 D V3, was chosen for its ease of installation and reliability. To ensure the chimneys would blend seamlessly into the environment, they were soda blasted to achieve a matte, non-reflective finish. The final installation at Hinxton Hall is a testament to how Schiedel products can be adapted for diverse architectural needs.

The Customer

Hinxton Hall is the home of the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, a leading research and educational center dedicated to advancing genomics. This campus focuses on unlocking the mysteries of the human genome—the very blueprint of life. The groundbreaking research conducted here is vital to uncovering the genetic roots of many illnesses that resist current treatments, and it is actively shaping the future of medicine and healthcare.
